Learning Objectives

  1. To raise awareness of the role and potential applications of ultrasound imaging in physiotherapy practice.

  2. To introduce the fundamental principles of ultrasound imaging, including terminology, physics, clinical applications and ethical considerations.

  3. To demonstrate how ultrasound imaging can support clinical reasoning and decision making in physiotherapy practice.

  4. To highlight the use of imaging ultrasound across different areas of physiotherapy practice, including musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and women's health.

  5. To illustrate how ultrasound imaging can be used to evaluate muscle activity and function, guide treatment procedures, and monitor treatment outcomes.

  6. To promote the safe, ethical, and evidence-informed integration of ultrasound imaging into physiotherapy practice.

  7. To foster international collaboration and knowledge exchange among physiotherapists with an interest in ultrasound imaging.

Juan Enrique Lee-Goic

  • Chilean physiotherapist and certified specialist in Intensive Care Physiotherapy.

  • Clinical Educator at the School of Physical Therapy, Universidad Andrés Bello.

  • Certified ultrasound instructor in USECC – Ultrasound in Emergency & Critical Care, organised by the Chilean Society of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine – Red Intensiva.

Simon Hayward 

  • Simon Hayward, PhD, BSc (Hons) PGCert MCSP is a Physiotherapist in diagnostic Lung Ultrasound at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom.

  • Simon has been using Lung Ultrasound to inform his clinical practice since 2013. In 2016 he initiated a Lung Ultrasound training programme aimed primarily at physiotherapists. 

  • From 2018-2022 Simon was a member of the Intensive Care Society's Focused Ultrasound Intensive Care (FUSIC) committee as the representative for Allied Health Professionals.

  • Simon has published over a dozen lung ultrasound papers and has recently completed a PhD-by-published works at the University of Essex."

Samuel Fernandez​

  • Dr. Samuel Fernández Carnero, PT, MSc, PhD, is a full-time Professor and researcher at the University of Alcalá (Spain), with over 25 years of clinical experience. 

  • His work focuses on musculoskeletal and rehabilitative ultrasound, ultrasound-guided invasive physiotherapy, and ultrasound education, with more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications and extensive international teaching experience. 

  • Educated in advanced training in musculoskeletal ultrasound and Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) in Spain, Holland, Israel, Polland, Ireland, and Canada. 

  • He is certified as a Level I and II Musculoskeletal Ultrasonographer by the Spanish Society of Ultrasound and the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), and completed specialized training in RUSI in lumbopelvic region, through the University College Dublin with Dr. Maria Stokes and Dr. Jackie Whittaker in Edmonton (Canada).

Gráinne Donnelly

  • BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy, MSc in Advancing Practice in Physiotherapy, PgCert Continence Practice for Physiotherapists.

  • Currently enrolled in a Doctoral research program at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

  • Trustee for Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP)  and Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy.

  • US experience: Gráinne has been utilising point of care ultrasound imaging in her pelvic health clinics since 2013. She completed introductory short courses within her professional field and attended a training day on pelvic floor ultrasound imaging by ISUOG in London, 2019. With no official training path for Ultrasound Imaging in Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, she collaborated with Jane Dixon, Lucia Berry and Sue Innes, under the leadership of Dr Mike Smith, to develop the scope of practice for pelvic health physiotherapists utilising point of care Ultrasound (Smith et al 2022, IUJ).

  • Gráinne, alongside Jane Dixon, provides Ultrasound training for pelvic health Physiotherapists and related disciplines throughout the UK and Europe.

Yuichi Abe

  • Dr. Yuichi Abe is Professor and Dean of International Affairs and Student Affairs at Iryo Sosei University. 

  • He holds a PhD in Medical Science and specializes in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and electrophysical agents. 

  • He has published widely, received the World Physiotherapy award in 2021, and actively contributes to international academic and professional exchanges, including leadership roles in ISEAPT and collaborations in Asia.

Mike Smith

  • Dr Mike Smith is a senior academic at Cardiff University, UK who specialises in supporting Point of Care Ultrasound initiatives for different professions, specialisms and geographical regions.  

  • Dual qualified as a Physiotherapist and as a Sonographer, Mike works at the interface of Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) and Radiology / Sonography, particularly in relation to governance and education.

  • Mike has led on the development of ultrasound imaging guidelines for Physiotherapists in specialities such as lung / critical care, pelvic health, ultrasound guided neurotoxin in spasticity and musculoskeletal disorders. 

  • On the international stage he plays a leading role in PoCUS initiatives across Europe, Asia and Latin America, with an emphasis upon developing region-centric solutions.
